Recent rumors surrounding the Yankees 2009 pitching rotation claim that Brian Cashman is leaning towards giving Phil Hughes the No. 5 spot, instead of signing lefty veteran Andy Pettitte.
While we know that Cash isn’t a loyal reader of The Max, we’re assuming that somebody reading this knows somebody who knows somebody who might come in contact with the Yankees GM. If you are that person, please give Cashman these very important statistics:
In 2008, Pettitte had 14 wins.
Also in 2008, you (yes, you the person reading this entry) tied Phil Hughes with the number of wins… ZERO. Here’s a list of some other notables that had just as many wins as Hughes. If you’re wondering, the goal of this exercise is to point out that Pettitte should be taking the mound at the new Stadium, not Hughes:
Tom Brady
Elmo
Ian Kennedy
Your mom
Marley from Marley & Me
Tony Romo’s likeability
Val Venis
Note: The above names also had 4 less losses than Hughes.
Why would Cashman want to give Hughes the starting spot? Andy Petite can do it; however, I have no connections whatsoever so I’m not too much of a help :).

Jeff and Jack – thank you so much for including me in your list of non-winners from 2008! Now if you would be so kind as to send my resume off to the Yankees – perhaps Cashman might sign me to a contract and I would be happy to give you two a cut as my agents! Oh – and did you notice that right now my Pats are winning and BOTH NY teams are losing?

I hope Pettitte comes back, but some combination of Hughes, Kennedy and Aceves would probably work. I’m still rooting for Phil. I think he’ll turn out fine (based strictly on female intuition).

Jeff & Jack – No worries – no offense was taken at my inclusion on your list! And I’m serious; can’t you get me one of those contracts that Cashman is throwing around? I’ll share with you! As always, I remain a loyal Max Reader!

lol. Nice to know that I tied Hughes in wins last season. I did have a pretty good year ‘off’ the mound. lol.

I have been of the opinion from the end of the 2008 season, that it makes a lot of sense for the Yankees to re-sign Andy Pettitte for a least one year !!! … He is a lefthanded starter, who, if healthy, will give the Yanks a solid 175-200 innings pitched, while winning, at least, 13-17 games … If Pettitte is not re-signed, I would give Alfredo Aceves and Phil Hughes the opportunity to win the 5th spot in the rotation, unless the Yankees have another free-agent starting pitcher in mind to sign !!! … Jimmy [27NYY]
